Our tour will begin at the birthplace of theater, Greece! We will be traveling back in time to 5th century B.C. and to the beginning of theater! Be sure to pack a camera, because you will want to remember this!

Itenerary

Theater of Dionysus

We'll start the tour with a look at the Theater of Dionysus. Located in present day Athens, Greece, this theater is set on a hillside, creating a natural sound system for audiences to hear the show. This theater could hold between 15,000 and 17,000 spectators! 

Tragedy vs. Comedy

While in Greece, we will have a workshop featuring Greek Tragedies and Greek Comedies of the day. We will discuss the similarities and differences, as well as what makes them comedic versus tragic. We will also look at playwrights of these genres. 

Aristotle

We will get the opportunity to learn about theater from one of the first masters of the stage. We will sit down to a group lecture and discussion with Aristotle. We will learn about Aristotle's Six Elements of Theater. We will also discuss if these six elements are present in modern theater, television, and cinema. 

Oedipus the King

After we have learned the differences between tragedy and comedy, we will look at one of the most famous tragedies of all time! Oedipus the King, by Sophocles. What better way to understand what we have learned than to watch it come to life on stage!
